Transiting in Papua New Guinea: Airside or Entering?

Updated 2026-10-18

One question decides it

Do you pass through immigration control? The PNGDAC is a declaration for people entering Papua New Guinea. Stay airside on a through-ticketed connection and you are not entering. Clear immigration — even briefly — and you are.

Airside connections

Through-checked bags and a single ticket are the signs of an airside connection. Follow the transit signage, keep your onward boarding pass, and stay in the international area. Confirm at check-in that your bags are checked through; without that, the connection may require you to exit.

Domestic connections through Port Moresby

Most domestic routes connect through Jacksons, and a domestic connection almost always means clearing immigration first, collecting bags, and checking in again. That is an entry, and it needs a declaration.

Leave a generous gap: international delays are common and a missed domestic connection is expensive to re-book.

Long layovers

A long stopover is not a transit exemption. If you leave the airport to sleep or eat in the city, you are entering the country. If you plan to stay airside, check that the terminal supports it overnight before you book.
